Case Study and Target Behavior
Operational Definition
Hitting refers to any instance of an intentional act of striking or forcefully touching another person using a closed fist or an open hand. This form of physical aggression can cause varying degrees of pain, injury, or discomfort to the other person, depending on the force and location of the blow. To assess the frequency of hitting behavior, clinicians may count the number of times a client engages in this behavior within an hour.
Function
The hitting behavior in this case study serves the purpose of attention.
Assessment
As part of the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) process, two data collection forms were used to determine the function of the target behavior. The first form used was the Functional Assessment Interview (FAI). It revealed that the caregiver’s primary behavioral concerns were hitting, screaming, and food refusal. Additionally, the Questions About Behavioral Function (QABF) were completed to further understand the function of these behaviors. The collected data from these forms indicated that hitting was the primary behavior targeted due to its high frequency and severity. Furthermore, it was found that hitting was primarily used for attention function.
Preparation
To prepare for writing your assignment, complete the following:
Choose a replacement behavior. Be sure the behavior is functioned-based and connected to the function of the client’s problem behavior.
Choose one replacement-based strategy to teach and reinforce the replacement behavior and one replacement-based strategy to maintain the replacement behavior. Use the library to conduct a literature search to support those strategies. If you need help using the library, refer to the .
Part 2 Replacement Behavior and Strategies
Include the following new information for this assignment:
Explain how a replacement behavior is connected to the function of the client’s problem behavior.
Be sure the behavior is functioned-based and connected to the function of the client’s problem behavior.
Describe one replacement-based strategy to teach and reinforce the replacement behavior and one replacement-based strategy to maintain the replacement behavior. (These strategies will be included in your Behavior Intervention Support Plan.)
In addition, explain how compassionate approaches were considered when selecting and implementing the strategies. Refer to the .
Locate at least two scholarly or professional resources supporting the use of your chosen replacement-based strategy for teaching and reinforcing the replacement behavior. Begin your synthesis of the studies by completing the following.
Identify common, relevant ABA concepts, principles, and methods used in the studies and explain how they can be used to modify the behavior identified in your case study.
Explain whether the interventions in the studies can be considered compassionate and least intrusive. Refer to the .
Make sure to also address the external and internal validity of these studies. For example, did the intervention show a socially significant impact on the behavior? Did the study demonstrate generalization of the behavior change?
Compare the similarities and differences between the interventions in the studies.

Conclusion
In 1–2 paragraphs, provide a synthesis of the articles and explain how they support the use of your chosen strategies.
