As we continue our study of the Classical Period, the general theme of these works again addresses the challenges of managing the Greek city state, and difficulty ‘individual’ suffer for their patriotic ideas, i.e. Isocrates, Demosthenes, Socrates, etc.
As we read and discuss these selections from Isocrates’ Oration to Philip, The Republic of Plato, Aristotle’s Poetics, Demosthenes’ On the Crown, and Menander’ comedy The Dyskolos, the crucial point to bear in mind are the authors’ intended audience and how these authors composed their works well aware of the sensibilities of their intended audience. We should address what the ancients saw in these works that resonated with them, and why we, in the 21st century, are still fascinated with these masterpieces of Greek literature.
For our fifth essay exam, you should discuss why you believe these works resonated with their target audience, and why you believe they still resonate with audiences in the 21st century. You should choose at least three of the selected works for this essay.
You should site specific examples from the text that effectively support your ideas and conclusions. This is one of the three items I review when assessing your essay, the others being:
a. why you believe these works resonated with their target audience, and
b. why you believe these works still resonate with you, in particular, and audiences in the 21st century.
Your essay should be between 3-4 pages, 1 ½ line space, font times new roman 12 pt.
