READ FIRST: Title, Author & Publication Name, Abstract Understand the authors’ argument and ensure you will find an idea, quote, or piece of data that relates to your research. LAST: Skim Methods & Results Return to these sections for more specifics regarding how they did the research, what happened and what the results mean. These sections might require multiple reads to fully understand. READ NEXT: Introduction The introduction will be a survey of relevant background for the study, including prior studies – it should explain WHY they have performed the study. This is a good place to find ideas to PARAPHRASE. JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS: The Last Sections Yes, skip to the end and read the conclusion & discussion before reading the middle of the article. This can be a good place to find DIRECT QUOTATIONS from the study. How to Read a Scientific Journal Article Cite as you write! Use APA style to include citations in your notes – you may notice that almost everything you need for a citation is on the top of the title page of the article.
CITING SOURCES FROM THE PUBLICATION MANUAL OF THE AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION (APA) STYLE (6th Edition)
The REFERENCES page is alphabetized according to the author’s last name. Each reference usually has the following: author, year of publication, title of book or article (Capitalize only the first word of the title, subtitle, or proper nouns), and publication data. If the work has a digital object identifier (doi), use it. You must have a reference for every source used in your paper. In the examples below, the references are single spaced. For your references, be sure they are double spaced and if the citation is more than one line indent the remaining lines by ½ an inch. If a periodical does not use volume numbers, include p. or pp. before the page numbers. This is so the reader will understand that the numbers refer to pages. Also, don’t use a period at the end of a web address.
If there is a conflict between these instructions and your professor’s instructions, always follow your professor’s instructions.Your professor is the person grading your paper.
