Annotated bibliography – Platformization and Communication (1200 words)
One of the first steps in researching a topic is to read widely; creating an annotated bibliography is essential for managing the reading process. This means starting with a general topic of study or sub-field, and choosing a list of sources that you believe reflect the most significant contributions to that area. For each source, write 1-2 paragraphs (200-300 words) that summarize the author’s main argument and (depending on the source) describe: the methodology used; the main findings; the structure of the article/book; a particular detail you found useful; an element you found problematic or lacking. Basically you are adding your own take on each source. Sources should be listed alphabetically, according to a recognized formatting style such as APA.
Reading Choices:
5 articles and 1 book – 6 readings (annotated bibliography for each should be 200 – 300 words: total at least 1200 words)
the methodology used;
• the main findings;
• the structure of the article/chapter/book;
• a particular detail you found useful;
• an element you found problematic or lacking; and/or
• how this source relates to one or more other sources on your list.
The rhetorical précis is a good start for providing a summary of the article, but for this assignment, you will also be adding your own take on each source to start to convey how the sources relate to one another. This will help you to start to build up a picture of your chosen subfield.
Steps:
1) Choose a sub-field: I would urge you to choose a subfield rather than a topic – your topic
may intersect with several sub-fields. For this course, please choose one. This will help
you make a coherent argument about what that sub-field is about when it comes time for
the final literature review assignment.
2) Read the articles/chapters/books, and write the annotations.
